Magpies down Swans
July 7th 2008 08:31
COLLINGWOOD has kept its hopes of a top-four finish alive with a 29-point win over Sydney at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.
The Magpies' 11.13 (79) to 6.14 (50) victory sees them trail the fourth-placed Swans by just six premiership points with eight rounds remaining.
Collingwood's win came without injured duo Josh Fraser and Anthony Rocca while the Swans were missing dual Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes, who was serving a one-match suspension after 204 consecutive matches.
It was Sydney's first defeat in their past seven matches this season.
Dale Thomas inspired the Magpies with three goals in the first half, including two after spectacular marks while Travis Cloke also chimed in with three majors.
Dane Swan (30 possessions) and small forwards Alan Didak (28) and Paul Medhurst (21) were also instrumental in Collingwood's fifth straight win over Sydney.
Defender Shane Wakelin maintained his recent dominace over Barry Hall, restricting the Swans spearhead to just 10 possessions and one goal.
For Sydney, Brett Kirk (29) and Jude Bolton (21) worked hard all night to get their side back into the contest, but their efforts proved to be fruitless as their forwards failed to make the most of their opportunities.
Collingwood was dominant for the first 15 minutes but their poor disposal around the ground and inability to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal ensured the Swans remained in touch, trailing by just two points at the first change.
The Magpies broke the game open in the second term, slamming on four unanswered goals to take a handy 26-point lead into the main break,
The start of the third term was a scrappy affair as both sides struggled to find an avenue to goal.
Medhurst finally broke the goal-scoring drought at the 13-minute mark with a clever snap on the outside of his boot.
Sydney was struggling to have an impact on the scoreboard and only kicked its second goal when promising youngster Jarred Moore received a 50m penalty after Heath Shaw backchatted the umpire.
The Magpies hit back with the next two through Medhurst and Cloke to take what appeared to be a match-winning 41-point lead into the final change.
But the Swans refused to give in and replied with the first three goals of the final stanza through Hall, Michael O'Loughlin and Henry Playfair to close to within 21 points.
O'Loughlin had the chance to bring the Swans back to within 16 points just two minutes later, but he missed from 20m out on a tight angle.
His miss proved to be costly with Collingwood ruckman Cameron Wood kicking truly after winning a free kick in the goal square before Didak put the result beyond doubt with a brilliant running goal minutes before the final siren.
