Magpies smash Roos

COLLINGWOOD has bounced back from the disappointing Anzac Day loss to Essendon with a 52-point demolition of North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.
The Magpies broke the game open in the second term before cruising to a convincing 19.13 (127) to 11.9 (75) victory.
The Kangaroos have now lost their past two matches to slump to a 2-4 win-loss record.
Some of the gloss was taken off the win for the Pies with forward Paul Medhurst injuring his ankle.
The loss was made worse for North with defender Daniel Pratt suffering a knee injury in the second term.
Tarykn Lockyer was influential with 25 possessions and four goals while Leon Davis was also damaging with 27 quality disposals and two goals.
They received good support from Dane Swan and Scott Pendlebury who racked up 30-plus touches while ruckman Josh Fraser responded to criticism during the week with 25 disposals and 18 hit-outs.
For North, former skipper Adam Simpson tried hard all night and finished with a game-high 34 possessions. Michael Firrito kept Travis Cloke quiet while Aaron Edwards booted four goals.
Collingwood dominated general play early and kicked the first three goals of the match to skip out to a 21-point lead.
The Magpies looked set to blow the Kangaroos away in the opening stanza but North started to win more of the contested football and hit back with the next four majors, including a spectacular volleyed goal from stand-in skipper Drew Petrie.
But it was the Pies who would go into quarter-time with their noses in front with John Anthony kicking truly at the 28-minute mark to give his side a five-point advantage.
They should have been further in front at the first change but they failed to make the most of their chances in front of goal, booting a wasteful 4.6 for the quarter.
Collingwood’s willingness to play on at all costs paid handsome dividends in the second term as they slammed on four unanswered goals in the first eight minutes to blow the margin out to 30 points.
Edwards got his side back into the contest with three goals in a seven minutes to reduce the deficit to just 17 points but the Magpies booted the last three majors of the first half to go into half-time with a commanding 36-point lead.
Any hopes of a second half comeback from the Roos was quickly quashed by the Pies who booted the first two goals of the third term through Lockyer and Anthony Corrie.
Only two more goals were kicked in what was a lacklustre third term as the Magpies went into the final change with a match-winning 47-point lead.
