Malthouse proud of his side

August 10th 2008 00:53
COLLINGWOOD coach Mick Malthouse says Saturday night's win over St Kilda at the MCG was not special because of the events that preceded it but rather because of what it means to the Magpies' season.

The Magpies put behind them the season-ending suspensions handed down to stars Alan Didak and Heath Shaw earlier in the week for their involvement in a drink-driving scandal to beat the Saints by 14 points at the MCG.

But Malthouse denied the win was extra special because of the events during the week.

"Under the circumstances it was a torrid week, we learned a lot about people - some good and some bad - but we were able to generate enough enthusiasm and desire to play a good football side and win," he said.

"I don't know about more satisfying, it was good to beat a side that was 10 (wins) and eight (losses) when you are 9-9 because the overall context of the victory means we draw level with St Kilda and have actually got our noses in front in terms of percentage."

"That is the pleasing thing about it and now we have got to keep our foot on the accelerator and approach next week's game with the same intensity we had in this one."

Malthouse was also pleased with the efforts of his most experienced players such as skipper Scott Burns, Josh Fraser and Tarkyn Lockyer.

"I was encouraged by the form of our leadership group and I said (to them) they really had to stand up this week," he said.

Malthouse paid credit to Fraser, who has been sidelined since round 12 but said
Collingwood's number one ruckman was not totally over his debilitating knee problems.

"That was his best game for almost 12 months," Malthouse said.

"I don't think any ruckman totally gets over a PCL (posterior cruciate ligament injury) - it's always in the back of their mind but it's just about taking away the pain and having the confidence to jump."

"But Josh played his best game in 12 months and that is every encouraging because he is such an important player for us and he is our vice-captain."
