I can't remember the last time a 15th placed side went into a match as favourites, but the Bombers have been in pretty good form in recent weeks.
Since the return of former skipper James Hird, the boys from Windy Hill have won two of their past three and were in the match at stages against Sydney a fortnight ago.
Last Friday night's win over the Magpies who were fighting for a top-four berth was full of merit as the Bombers held their composure in the last quarter.
There is plenty to like about Essendon, and Bombers fans have much to look forward to, with Brent Stanton and Jobe Watson the club's leading possession getters and forward Courtney Johns contuining to develop after a wretched run with injuries.
As we all know, unless you have been living under a rock, club great Hird has decided to play on for another year, which is not only good news for Essendon supporters but the game itself.
There is no questioning Hird's talent, and his mere presence seems to give the younger Bomber brigade an extra fillip.
His advice and the way he goes about his football can only be of benefit to the likes of Stanton, Watson and co as Essendon looks to push itself back up towards finals contention in the seasons ahead.
Meanwhile, Hawthorn were very impressive against the Blues last week after jumping out to a 7-goal lead at half-time before winning by 23 points.
The Hawks played a more direct and exciting brand of football and with exciting youngster Lance Franklin bagging six, had a tall option in the forward 50 that has been lacking for the bulk of the year.
The test for Franklin now is to back up his good performance with another if he is serious about becoming a good senior footballer.
As we know one swallow doesn't make a summer.
While both sides are out of finals contention, there is still plenty on the line as both clubs aim to gain some momentum into the 2007 season.
Expect the Hawks to have too much run against a Bombers side which will essentially be playing with 21 players, if Dean Rioli is included having played only ten minutes in the VFL last week. Hawthorn by 32 points.
