Nathan Ablett for the first time in his football career fronted a packed media at skilled stadium. Flanked by coach Mark Thompson Nathan confirmed many Geelongs fans fears by saying he will walk away from the game.
"I have decided to have a break from AFL football for the time being," he said. "I feel as if I don't have the passion and commitment to continue playing at the highest level. To do so would therefore be unfair to the club and my teammates.
"I am planning on getting away from football for now, however I may look to continue at VFL level.
"Being involved in winning a grand final is something that doesn't happen to a lot of players and I feel privileged and honoured to be part of our 2007 premiership."
Mark Thompson believed that Nathan may be a chance to come back in 2009.
"We would like to have a bit more time for Nathan to make up his mind completely," he said. "He hasn't made his mind up completely so we are hoping that one day he comes back, and that one day is pretty soon.
"There has always been something about Nathan which we were a little bit unsure about. He's not really like a lot of other young men who are so passionate about the game and would do almost anything to play.
"But in saying that he has got enormous ability and we have not given up hope that he will play for Geelong again. If he needs a bit of time now, we will give him that time and support him whichever way we can.
"In the interest of football we hope that one day he gets back to playing."
Thompson also stated that Nathan's brother Gary was disappointed that Nathan decided to quit.
Talking on SEN Nathan's manage Liam Pickering said that Nathan would be a good chance to come back and play VFL in 2008.
"He is going to take some time out for a while, after that we will see if he wants to play VFL football."
Other than that Pickering believes that Nathan may pursue a career in building, taking up an apprenticeship.
