Petrie suffers unlucky break

March 24th 2010 02:11

STAR North Melbourne utility Drew Petrie is set to have his start to the season delayed even more after fracturing his foot at training on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old, who will miss the first two games of the home-and-away season through suspension, fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

He will see a specialist this week to determine how long he will be sidelined.

Petrie said the injury occurred when he changed direction as he was running.

"I thought I stepped on a sprinkler head on the oval but that was actually when the bone broke," Petrie told the club's official website.

"The instant pain was really sharp but then it went away."

Despite the injury, Petrie is optimistic about being able to make a major contribution in 2010.

"It's not as if I have injured my knee and will be out for a year, so it means I'll still get to play a large chunk of the season," he said.

"I've never been injured like this before so it's really different for me. I'm disappointed and it hasn't really sunk in yet."

"I was due to miss the first two games of the season through suspension anyway but it'll hurt not being able to play straight after that."
