Pies win thriller

July 10th 2009 13:39
COLLINGWOOD has consolidated its place in the top four with a thrilling one-point win over the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

The Magpies set up the win with a seven-goal first term before withstanding a last-quarter surge from the Bulldogs to prevail 17.9 (111) to 16.14 (110).

The Pies have now won seven in a row - their their longest winning streak since 1990 when they claimed their last premiership

Alan Didak continued his brilliant run of form with 33 quality possessions while Dane Swan was his usual damaging self with 34 disposals and two goals.

Magpies skipper Nick Maxwell was busy in defence with 24 touches while Leon Davis chimed in with four goals.

For the Bulldogs, Robert Murphy helped get his side back into the contest, racking up 11 of his 27 possessions in the last quarter while Ryan Hargrave helped himself to 34 disposals and 11 marks.

Adam Cooney and Matthew Boyd were busy contributors in the middle with 30-plus touches while Brian Lake kept John Anthony goalless and racked up 25 touches and 12 marks.

Collingwood jumped out of the blocks in the opening stanza and led by as much as 33 points when Josh Fraser kicked a running goal from 45m.

The Magpies looked set to put the contest beyond the Western Bulldogs’ reach in the first term but the Dogs lifted their rating and hit back with late majors from Higgins and Cooney to trail by just 22 points at quarter-time.

Goals from Lindsay Gilbee and Jason Akermanis in the opening four minutes of the second term saw the Bulldogs edge closer.

But with Swan and Didak exerting their influence in the middle the Magpies were able to slam on four of the next five goals to open up a 29-point break at half-time.

It was the Davis show in the third term - the exciting 26-year-old booting three goals and taking a spectacular mark over Jarrod Harbrow.

The result appeared to be well and truly beyond doubt with the Magpies holding a commanding 34-point advantage at three-quarter-time but the Dogs willed themselves back into the contest and closed to within less than one goal.

Dale Thomas kicked Collingwood’s only goal for the quarter to put his side seven points ahead with just over one minute remaining before Ryan Griffen kicked truly to give the Dogs a glimmer of hope.

But it was too little too late as the Magpies held on in the dying seconds to record a season-defining win.
