Port dispose of Dons

March 29th 2009 08:04
PORT ADELAIDE has kicked off its 2009 campaign with a 41-point win over Essendon at AAMI Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Power got the early jump and survived several challenges from the Bombers to prevail 15.17 (107) to 9.12 (66).

Daniel Motlop and Justin Westhoff were damaging up forward, booting four and three goals respectively while veteran Peter Burgoyne was influential in the middle with a game-high 32 touches.

Danyle Pearce was equally as effective with 31 disposals while Josh Carr racked up 23 touches in his comeback game.

For the Bombers, Jobe Watson had a team-high 31 possessions while former Adelaide Crow Hayden Skipworth was impressive on debut with 30 disposals and one goal.

But Essendon’s key forwards failed to have an impact - skipper Matthew Lloyd was held goalless while Scott Lucas and Jay Neagle managed just two goals between them.

Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams promised that the Power would play a more attacking brand of football in 2009 and his side delivered, slamming on the first three goals of the match in an eight-minute burst.

But they managed only more major for the term to take a 20-point lead into quarter-time.

Essendon was more competitive around the ground after quarter-time but they failed to make any inroads on the scoreboard.

The Power was guilty of making sloppy errors in the second term but they still managed to go into the main break with a 28-point lead thanks to two goals from Westhoff and a late major from Brett Ebert.

Port could have easily been further in front at half-time had they made the most of their chances in front of goal - they booted a wayward 4.4 for the quarter.

Back-to-back goals from Brent Stanton and Andrew Lovett saw the Bombers close to within 16 points in the third term but the Power had all the answers with late goals from Robert Gray and Carr giving Port a handy 22-point buffer heading into the final change.

The final term got off to the worst possible start for the Bombers with a David Hille turnover in the midfield resulting in a goal to Gray.

Essendon hit back through Lucas and could have been within three goals with nine minutes left on the clock but a goal to Alwyn Davey was disallowed because the umpires weren’t sure whether Davey’s boot got the final touch on the ball.

It was all the Power from that moment on as they slammed on the last three goals of the contest to cap off a solid start to their season.

Why no mention of the dispicable behaviour of Dean Brogan? Just because he's so often gulity of bringing the game into disrepute, doesn't mean it shouldn't be mentioned. He is a blight on the game (not the player obviously, who was an ornament!).
And as for the AFL tribunal downgrading from 'intentional' to 'reckless' his after-the-siren hit on Lovett - have a bloody look at yourselves!! And the swine isn't even penitent - isn't that what the punsishment is aimed at instillilng in the offender, that the act was WRONG? Maybe another couple of weeks would get the message through his three-inch thick skull. WRONG WRONG WRONG.
