Power upset Crows

July 20th 2008 08:38
PORT ADELAIDE has dealt a major blow to Adelaide's finals chances with a hard-fought 12-point win at AAMI Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Power's 13.14 (92) to 11.14 (80) victory ended a five-match losing streak and consigned the Crows to their fifth straight loss.

Adelaide now finds itself outside the top eight for the first time since round one.

Daniel Motlop and Brett Ebert were the chief destroyers with four goals each while Danyle Pearce was awarded the Showdown Medal for his 24 disposals and three goals.

Steven Salopek, Domenic Cassisi and Shaun Burgoyne were all busy contributors in the middle while Kane Cornes (23 disposals) did a superb blanketing job on Andrew McLeod, restricting the dual Norm Smith medallist to just 11 disposals.

Michael Doughty was Adelaide's best with 29 disposals and two late goals. Chris Knights (28 possessions) tried hard all afternoon while Simon Goodwin booted three majors.

Port Adelaide dominated the opening term, with David Rodan, Salopek and Cassisi particularly damaging at the stoppages.

The Power managed nine scoring shots from their 15 entries inside 50 in the first quarter but failed to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal, booting a wasteful 4.5 to take an 11-point lead into the first change.

Both sides traded goals early in the second term before Adelaide took control.

The Crows started to win the contested football but like the Power in the first term they failed to make the most of their chances, booting seven straight behinds in a seven-minute period.

Adelaide's hard work was finally rewarded when Bernie Vince took a courageous mark and kicked truly from directly in front to put his side two points in front at the main break.

Neither side was able to break the game open in a 20-minute patch of high-pressure football before Nathan Lonie, who had a goal denied thanks to a controversial umpiring decision earlier in the term, kicked truly from 45 metres.

And when Ebert converted after the siren the Power had a handy 14-point lead heading into the final change.

A defensive error by Graham Johncock allowed Motlop to kick the first goal of the final stanza to extend Port's lead to 20 points.

The Crows got back in the contest with two goals in four minutes but the Power had all the answers with majors from Justin Westhoff, Pearce and Ebert sealing Port's fifth win of the season.
