Rivers injures ankle

MELBOURNE defender Jared Rivers is in doubt for the start of the Demons' NAB Cup campaign against Hawthorn in Tasmania next Saturday after injuring his ankle in the club's intra-club match on Saturday.
Rivers, who has played just nine games in the past two years after batting osteitis pubis in 2007 and then being hampered by more groin problems as well as a hip complaint last year, left the field in the first quarter and did not return.
Melbourne coach Dean Bailey said Rivers' latest injury was not serious.
"He just twisted his ankle, so he'll be OK. He'll be fine with some ice in the next 24 hours. In Jared's words it was ‘bleep, bleep, bleep ankle’ … He was really looking forward to playing today," he said after the match.
"He's worked incredibly hard over the last six months. Today if he was able to get through the game, he would've got some confidence from it..
"It was really disappointing he was able to only play five or seven minutes but it's five or seven minutes that he didn't have last year (during the pre-season) so we're progressing with him."
