Roos overrun Pies

July 18th 2008 12:58
NORTH MELBOURNE has moved into the top eight with an 18-point win over Collingwood at Telstra Dome on Friday night.

The Roos trailed by 13 points at half time but lifted in the second half, booting 12 goals to seven to record a 17.12 (114) to 14.12 (96) victory.

Drew Petrie starred for the Kangaroos with 20 possessions, 11 marks, 26 hit-outs and two goals while Brent Harvey and Daniel Wells were damaging with 27 possessions apiece.

Michael Firrito kept Collingwood key forward Travis Cloke goalless while Josh Gibson restricted Paul Medhurst to just two goals.

For the Magpies, Scott Pendlebury tried hard all night, finishing the match with 25 disposals and one goal. Dane Swan lifted in the third term and finished with 22 possessions and one goal while promising youngster John Anthony booted four majors.

The Kangaroos had their fair share of opportunities in the first term but their inability to make the most of their chances meant they trailed by 11 points at the first change.

North kicked the first two goals of the second term through Lindsay Thomas and Corey Jones to hit the front.

Anthony kicked his second to give the Magpies back the lead before goals to Shane O'Bree and Sharrod Wellingham saw Collingwood skip out to an 18-point advantage.

The Kangaroos responded with two of the next three to remain within striking distance, with the Magpies holding a 13-point lead at the main break.

Petrie started to get on top of Cameron Wood and Chris Bryan in the ruck in the third term and provided his midfield with first use of the football.

Wells, Harvey, Daniel Harris and Brady Rawlings were all influential in the middle as the Kangaroos slammed on four goals in a stunning nine-minute burst to regain the lead.

Collingwood responded with majors from Nick Maxwell, Medhurst and Swan but goals from Petrie and Wells gave the Kangaroos a 10-point lead heading into the final change.

The Magpies got the crucial first goal of the final term through Anthony but the Kangaroos had all the answers as they piled on four of the next five to put the result beyond doubt.
