Roos thump Hawks

NORTH MELBOURNE has thumped Hawthorn to the tune of 40 points in wet conditions at North Ballarat Oval on Saturday.
The Kangaroos kept the Hawks goalless in the first half and went into the main break with a commanding 43-point lead before recording a 12.11 (83) to 6.7 (43) victory.
The loss was made worse for Hawthorn with ruckman Simon Taylor suffering an ankle injury in the second term while midfielder Brad Sewell injured his shoulder.
Taylor's absence for an extended period would be a massive blow for the Hawks given that Robert Campbell retired at the end of last season and young ruckman Max Bailey won't play in 2010 after undergoing his third knee reconstruction.
Roos wingman Daniel Wells starred in his return from osteitis pubis with three goals while youngsters Ryan Bastinac and Jack Ziebell impressed in the middle.
For Hawthorn, Lance Franklin kicked three goals while Garry Moss and skipper Sam Mitchell battled valiantly.
NORTH MELBOURNE 3.2, 7.4, 9.8, 12.11 (83)
HAWTHORN 0.2, 0.2, 4.4, 6.7 (43)
GOALS: North Melbourne: Wells 3, Smith 2, Hale 2, Urquhart 2, Ross, Jones, Campbell
Hawthorn: Franklin 3, Peterson, Hooper, Renouf
The NAB Challenge match between Geelong and Brisbane at Visy Park was cancelled due to heavy rain and lightening. The Lions plan to ask the AFL for permission to play a practice match a week before the start of the home-and-away season.
