Round eight preview: Brisbane v Adelaide
May 15th 2009 15:47
VENUE and TIME: Gabba, Saturday May 16, 7.10pm (AEST).
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 28, Brisbane 14, Adelaide 14
LAST TIME: Brisbane 11.17 (83) def. Adelaide 10.10 (70), Round 13 2008 at the Gabba
RECENT HISTORY: Adelaide has won three of its past four against Brisbane with two of those wins coming at the Gabba.
FORM: Brisbane has bounced back from the 93-point loss to Geelong in round five with wins over Essendon and Richmond to move into the top eight with a 4-3 win-loss record. Adelaide has lost its past two matches to the Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide. All three of the Crows’ wins this season have come away from home.
MEDICAL ROOM: Brisbane midfielder Troy Selwood will miss the clash against Adelaide after suffering concussion in a sickening head clash with Richmond youngster Alex Rance last weekend while small forward Rhan Hooper remains sidelined with an ankle injury. The Lions are also without ruckmen Jamie Charman (ankle - 3-4 weeks) and Matthew Leuenberger (knee - 11 weeks) while Bradd Dazliell is at least six weeks away from returning from a knee injury. For the Crows, All-Australian defender Nathan Bock will miss with a hamstring injury while forwards Trent Hentschel and Brett Burton remain on the sidelines with knee injuries.
KEY MATCH-UPS: Ben Rutten vs. Jonathan Brown
Brown was instrumental in his side’s win over Richmond with 19 possessions, 11 marks and four goals.
The Brisbane skipper is currently in top form and looms as the main man Adelaide must contain if they are going to snap a two-game losing streak.
In Adelaide’s last win over the Lions in 21, 2007, Rutten kept Brown to just one goal in a performance that earned him the two Brownlow medal votes.
Rutten will be given the job once again on Saturday night in what shapes as being a crucial match-up in determining the outcome of this contest.
If Rutten is going to be any hope of keeping Brown quiet he will need his midfield to deny the likes of Luke Power, Simon Black and Travis Johnstone any time or space otherwise they will continually deliver the football cleanly inside 50 to the Lions star.
Daniel Merrett vs. Taylor Walker
Walker played the best game of his career against the Bulldogs, finishing the match with 18 possessions, nine marks and four goals.
The Crows will need the impressive 19-year-old to back it up with another good performance on Saturday night as Jason Porplyzia can’t be expected to do it all on his own up forward.
Merrett, who kept Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt goalless last weekend, looms as the obvious candidate to match-up on Riewoldt.
If Walker is going to have any hope of having an impact against the Lions he will need his teammates to move the football quickly through the middle of the ground as Merrett is regarded as one of the best spoilers in the competition and you would expect his to win most of the one-on-one duels.
Luke Power vs. Scott Thompson
Thompson was among his side’s best in the loss to the Bulldogs with a game-high 34 possessions - 26 of which came in a blistering first half.
The Adelaide midfielder played a key role in the Crows’ last win over the Lions at the Gabba in round seven, 2007, racking up 22 disposals and booting three goals in a performance that earned him the three Brownlow medal votes.
The former Demon leads the Crows for disposals and is second for inside 50’s.
Brisbane will be keen to shut him down as Adelaide’s forwards will struggle to receive enough supply without his drive through the middle.
With Selwood out of the side Brisbane coach Michael Voss may opt to use Power in an attacking run with role.
Power, who racked up a game-high 40 disposals the last time these two sides met in round 13 last year, will try and hurt Thompson going the other way with his clean use of the football.
Tyson Edwards vs. Simon Black
Black was influential in the win over the Tigers with 24 quality disposals and seven inside 50’s.
The 2002 Brownlow medallist is damaging with his ability to win the football in close, find teammates in space by hand and also deliver the football cleanly inside 50.
If the Crows are going to be any hope of containing the Lions’ in-form forwards in Brown and Daniel Bradshaw they will need to quell the influence of Black.
Like Black, Edwards is highly effective at winning the football at the stoppages and looms as the obvious candidate to go head-to-head with the classy Brisbane midfielder in what will be a pivotal duel.
Whichever player is able to win more of the contested football and get their side going with their clean use of the football by hand should be on the winning side of the ledger.
VERDICT: Adelaide will head into this match with some confidence given their recent record at the Gabba and the fact that they are yet to lose away from home so far in 2009. But they are ranked 14th in the AFL for inside 50’s - meaning forwards like Walker and Porplyzia will struggle to get enough of the football to help their side overcome a Brisbane side that has two in-form forwards in Daniel Bradshaw and Brown. Lions by 22 points.
