Round eight preview: Fremantle v Hawthorn

May 14th 2009 14:24
VENUE and TIME: Subiaco Oval, Friday 15 May, 8:40 pm (AEST)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 20, Fremantle 6, Hawthorn 14

LAST TIME: Hawthorn 16.16 (112) def Fremantle 14.13 (97), Round 2, 2008 at Subiaco Oval

RECENT HISTORY: Hawthorn has won five of its past seven against Fremantle with two of those wins coming at Subiaco Oval.

FORM: Fremantle has won its past three matches against Sydney, West Coast and Carlton after starting the season with four straight losses. Hawthorn was completely outclassed by a hard-running Essendon side at Etihad Stadium last Friday night, eventually going down by 44 points. The reigning premiers currently find themselves in ninth place on the AFL ladder with a 3-4 win-loss record.

MEDICAL ROOM: Fremantle welcomes back elevated rookie Greg Broughton from an ankle injury but will be without midfielder Rhys Palmer (knee) for the remainder of the year while Ryan Crowley (foot) may return for the last month of the home-and-away season. Des Headland has recovered from his long-term calf injury and will play for Subiaco in the WAFL this weekend. Small forward Hayden Ballantyne (wrist) is a fortnight away from playing while Chris Mayne (stress fracture) won’t play his first game of the season until mid June. For the Hawks, Brent Guerra returns from a back injury but playmaker Luke Hodge will miss up to a month of football with an adductor strain while Cameron Stokes will be sidelined for a fortnight with a hamstring injury. Clinton Young (hamstring) will miss another week while defender Stephen Gilham (knee), Trent Croad (foot), Max Bailey (knee) and Rick Ladson (knee) are sidelined indefinitely.

KEY MATCH-UPS: Chris Tarrant vs. Lance Franklin

The last time these two sides met in round two last year Franklin booted four goals to help lift his side to a 15-point win.

Franklin was his side’s most productive forward in the loss to the Bombers with five goals and the Hawks will need a similar performance from him on Friday night if they are going to overcome a Dockers side high on confidence.

Tarrant played a key role in Fremantle’s upset win over the Blues, restricting Carlton spearhead Brendan Fevola to just one goal.

Expect the former Magpie to be given the task of matching up on Franklin in what shapes as being a pivotal duel in determining the outcome of this match.

If Tarrant is going to win his individual duel with Franklin he will need his midfield to apply relentless pressure and not give the Hawks any time or space to deliver the football cleanly inside 50 as last year’s Coleman medallist is virtually unstoppable on the lead.

Brad Sewell vs. Paul Hasleby

Hasleby continued his brilliant start to the season with a team-high 32 possessions in the win over the Blues - 20 of which came by hand.

The 27-year-old is damaging with his ability to win the football at the stoppages and use it cleanly by hand to the find the likes of Stephen Hill, Matthew Pavlich, Garrick Ibbotson and co. in space.

The Hawks will be keen to limit his influence in close as it will help shut-down Fremantle’s running game.

Sewell is Hawthorn’s best stopper in the midfield and looms as the obvious candidate to go head-to-head with Hasleby in the middle.

The 25-year-old is also highly adept at winning the football at close quarters and he will try to hurt Hasleby going the other way.

Garrick Ibbotson vs. Sam Mitchell

Mitchell was instrumental in the Hawks’ win over the Dockers at Subiaco Oval last year, racking up a team-high 27 disposals in a performance that earned him one Brownlow medal vote.

The Hawthorn skipper is effective at winning the football and dishing it off by hand to find his runners in space.

If the Dockers are going to be any hope of containing Hawthorn’s talented forward line they will need to quell the influence of Mitchell in the middle.

Ibbotson was far from disgraced in his duel with Carlton skipper Chris Judd last weekend - Judd racked up 28 touches while Ibbotson helped himself to 23 disposals.

Expect Fremantle coach Mark Harvey to give Ibbotson the job on Mitchell in what will be yet another crucial contest.

Ibbotson will need to be proactive and gets his hands on the football in order to make Mitchell accountable.

Simon Taylor vs. Aaron Sandilands

Sandilands was a dominant force in the ruck last weekend, helping himself to a staggering 42 hit outs in against the Blues.

Taylor, who will receive some support in the ruck from Robert Campbell, faces the unenviable task of going against Sandilands who is second in the league for hit outs per game with an average of 29.6.

The Hawks don’t need Taylor to win the bulk of the hit outs but they do need him to at least apply some body pressure on Sandilands.

If Taylor is able to break even in the ruck you would expect the likes of Mitchell and Sewell to win their fair share of the football at the stoppages.

VERDICT: This is shaping as a season-defining match for Hawthorn who desperately needs to start stringing some wins together to kick start their premiership defence. The injury-ravaged Hawks still have the class up forward to cause Fremantle plenty of headaches but with three of their first-choice defenders in Croad, Gilham and Hodge missing they will struggle to contain a Dockers side that has shared the load up forward in the past three weeks. Dockers by 14 points.
