Round fifteen preview: Adelaide v Fremantle
July 10th 2009 15:29
VENUE and TIME: AAMI Stadium, Sunday 11 July, 7.40pm (AEST)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 23, Adelaide 14, Fremantle 9
LAST TIME: Adelaide 15.14 (104) d Fremantle 11.14 (80), Round 3 at Subiaco, 2009
RECENT HISTORY: Adelaide has won three of its past five matches against Fremantle.
MEDICAL ROOM: Adelaide welcomes back skipper Simon Goodwin from a knee injury but youngster Shaun McKernan will miss six weeks with a broken arm. Brad Moran (knee), Jonathon Griffin (calf), Trent Hentschel (knee), Jarrhan Jacky (hamstring) and Nick Gill (ankle) remain on the sidelines. For the Dockers, captain Matthew Pavlich will miss at least another week with a calf injury . Andrew Foster (calf) and Chris Mayne (hamstring) are also unavailable while hard-running defender Roger Hayden (leg) and Michael Johnson (ankle) are sidelined indefinitely.
FORM: Adelaide has won six matches in a row to move to fifth place on the AFL ladder with a 9-5 win-loss record. Fremantle led by four goals at three-quarter time against Carlton at Subiaco Oval last Sunday but were overrun and eventually went down by 15 points. The Dockers have won just three games for the year.
KEY MATCH-UPS: Michael Doughty vs. Paul Hasleby
Hasleby was among his side’s best in the loss to the Blues with a team-high 31 possessions - 17 of which were by hand.
The 28-year-old is highly effective at winning the football in close and using it cleanly by hand to find his teammates in space.
Adelaide will want to limit his influence as it will help prevent Fremantle from getting their running game going.
Doughty has quelled the influence of the likes of Chris Judd and Sam Mitchell this season and will most likely line-up on Hasleby in what shapes as being a crucial match-up in determining the outcome of this match.
Expect the Crows midfielder, who has averaged 20 disposals per game so far this season, to try and hurt Hasleby going the other way.
Garrick Ibbotson vs. Scott Thompson
Thompson continued his superb run of form with 27 touches and five inside 50’s against the Tigers.
The former Demon is one of Adelaide’s most damaging midfielders - he leads the Crows for clearances and is second for inside 50’s.
Since Crowley went down with a foot injury, Ibbotson has been given the task of running with some of the competition’s elite midfielders and will most likely be given the job on Thompson.
The Dockers will need Ibbotson to apply relentless pressure all day and deny Thompson any time or space at the stoppages otherwise the 26-year-old will provides the likes of Kurt Tippett and Jason Porplyzia with plenty of quality supply.
Nathan Bock vs. Luke McPharlin
With Pavlich still unavailable the likes of McPharlin will need to step up and have a big game otherwise the Dockers will struggle to kick a big enough score to overcome an Adelaide side that has been firing on all cylinders in recent times.
Bock has the height and athletic capabilities to match McPharlin will line up on the former Hawk.
McPharlin will need his midfield to be smart with their delivery of the football inside 50 if he is going to have any hope of winning his battle with the in-form Bock.
If the Dockers aren’t smart with their use of the football Boxk, who helped himself to 27 possessions and 11 marks against Richmond, will continually rebound the football out of defensive 50 and set up his side’s attacking forays forward.
Antoni Grover vs. Jason Porplyzia
The last time these two sides met in round three Porplyzia booted four goals to help lift his side to a 24-point win.
Despite standing at just 179cm, Porplyzia is very good overhead so you would expect Grover, who can match him in the air and at ground level to be given first crack in what shapes as being a pivotal duel.
Grover will need to be switched on defensively all night and not give Porplyzia any time or space in which to work in as he is capable of swinging a game in his side’s favour with a quick burst of brilliance - three of his four goals against Fremantle earlier this year came in the last term.
VERDICT: With their two best players in Aaron Sandilands and Pavlich not in the side Fremantle will struggle to match a more experienced Adelaide outfit. Expect Neil Craig's men to win more of the contested football and cruise to a relatively comfortable victory. Crows by 46 points.
