Round fifteen preview: Carlton v Richmond

July 10th 2009 15:22
VENUE and TIME: MCG, Saturday 11 July, 2.10pm (AEST)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 202, Carlton 116, Richmond 84, Drawn 2

LAST TIME: Carlton 23.12 (150) def Richmond 9.13 (67), Round 1 2009 at the MCG

RECENT HISTORY: Carlton has won three of its past four against Richmond - the most recent an 83-point demolition of the Tigers in round one.

FORM: Carlton got their season back on track with a hard-fought 15-point victory over Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on Sunday. The result sees the Blues move to seventh place on the AFL ladder with a 7-7 win-loss record. Richmond was competitive against Adelaide at Gold Coast Stadium in Carrara last Saturday night but they went down by 17 points. The Tigers are in 14th position with just three wins for the season.

MEDICAL ROOM: Carlton are still without Paul Bower (knee, 2-3 weeks), Sam Jacobs (foot, 1-2 weeks), Darren Pfeiffer (shoulder, 1 week), Jarrad Waite (knee, season), Andrew Walker (shoulder, 1-2 weeks), Robert Warnock (foot, 1-2 weeks), Simon Wiggins (hamstring, 1-2 weeks). The Tigers welcome back Andrew Collins from a hip injury but will be without midfielder Nathan Foley (calf) for two to three weeks. Nathan Brown (groin) remains on the sidelines, veteran Matthew Richardson is on track for a late season return from a hamstring injury while ruckman Troy Simmonds (adductor) is expected to miss two matches.

KEY MATCH-UPS: Daniel Jackson vs. Chris Judd

Judd led from the front in the win over the Dockers with a game-high 35 possessions and eight inside 50’s.

The last time these two sides met in round one Judd was among his side’s best with 23 touches, two goals and five inside 50’s.

Limiting Judd’s influence through the middle will be a key for the Tigers if they are going to contain a Blues side that has the fourth most productive forward line in the AFL.

Jackson has been a shining light in what has been a dismal season for Richmond, more than holding his own against some of the competition’s elite midfielders and also winning his fair share of the football.

Richmond will need Jackson, who has averaged just under 24 disposals per game so far this season, to get his hands on the football and try and hurt Judd going the other way otherwise the former West Coast skipper will dictate terms.

Aaron Joseph vs. Brett Deledio

Deledio was among his team’s best in the loss to the Crows with 31 possessions, one goal and five inside 50’s.

Last year’s best-and-fairest winner is damaging with his ability to break the lines and pump the football inside 50.

The Tigers will need Deledio to fire otherwise they will struggle to receive enough quality supply to have any chance of kicking a winning score.

Joseph has performed well in negating roles so far in 2009 and could well be given first crack at Deledio.

The 20-year-old is a traditional tagger in the sense that he isn’t overly concerned with winning his own football - he has averaged just 11 disposals per game this year.

Given that Joseph will employ a tight tag, Deledio will need his teammates to block for him at the stoppages otherwise he will struggle to have an impact on the contest.

Chris Newman vs. Eddie Betts

When these two sides met in round one Betts was his side’s most damaging forward with five goals.

Betts has booted a career-best 30 goals so far this season and could well prove to be the match-winner on Saturday if he isn’t watched closely.

Newman usually gets the job on the opposition’s most dangerous small forward and looms as the obvious candidate to line-up on the dangerous Betts.

The Richmond skipper will need to be switched on defensively for the full four quarters as Betts has the uncanny ability to create something out of nothing.

Expect Newman, who has averaged 21 disposals per game in ‘09, to run off Betts at every available opportunity and try and hurt him on the rebound.

Michael Jamison vs. Mitch Morton

Morton was his side’s only multiple goal kicker in the round one clash between these two teams with four goals.

Jamison is capable of matching Morton in the air and at ground level and will most likely be given first crack at the former Eagle.

In the round one clash the Tigers entered inside their forward 50 a paltry 36 times.

Morton will need his midfield to lift their work rate at the stoppages otherwise he will struggle to receive enough of the football to have an impact on the scoreboard.

VERDICT: Richmond defender Kelvin Moore said during the week the club is keen to atone for the humiliation of the round one loss to Carlton but with Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs and Judd all in top form the Blues will win the midfield battle and provide their forwards with plenty of quality supply to kick a winning score. Blues by 37 points
