Round six preview: Port Adelaide v Adelaide

May 1st 2009 15:00
VENUE and TIME: AAMI Stadium, Saturday 2 May, 7.40pm (AEST)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 25, Port Adelaide 13, Adelaide 12

LAST TIME: Port Adelaide 13.14 (92) def Adelaide 11.14 (80), Round 16, 2008 at AAMI Stadium.

RECENT HISTORY: Adelaide has won three of the past four clashes between these two sides.

FORM: Port was thumped to the tune of 66 points by a red-hot St Kilda side at AAMI Stadium last weekend after recording an impressive 30-point win over reigning premiers Hawthorn in round four. The Power have won three of their first five games. Adelaide bounced back from an eight-goal loss to Geelong with a hard-fought 17-point win over Melbourne in a low-scoring affair at the MCG last Sunday evening. The Crows have also won three of their first five matches.

MEDICAL ROOM: Port Adelaide star Shaun Burgoyne will miss three to four games after undergoing surgery on his troublesome left knee while forward Justin Westhoff also remains on the sidelines with a broken foot. For the Crows, midfielder Chris Knights (fractured eye socket) remains on the sidelines while Nick Gill (hamstring) and Trent Hentschel (knee) are unavailable.

KEY MATCH-UPS: Kane Cornes vs. Scott Thompson

When these two sides met in round three last year Thompson was among his side’s best with 27 possessions, seven marks and four inside 50’s in a performance that earned him the two Brownlow medal votes.

Curtailing his influence through the middle will be a key for the Power if they are going to prevent Adelaide’s forwards from receiving quality supply.

Cornes did a superb blanketing job on in-form St Kilda midfielder Nick Dal Santo last weekend and will most likely be given the task of running with Thompson on Saturday night.

The Port tagger quelled the influence of Dal Santo but he failed to have an impact himself - he did rack up 20 possessions but none of them were damaging.

The Power will need Cornes to pay close attention to Thompson and also hurt him going the other way.

Graham Johncock vs. Daniel Motlop

Motlop was instrumental in the round 16 win last year, booting four goals to help lift his side to a 12-point victory.

The electrifying 27-year-old has been well below his best in recent weeks, managing just 4.8 in his past three matches.

But Motlop can turn it on at any stage and could well prove to be the match-winner against the Crows.

Johncock usually gets the opposition’s most dangerous forward and looms as the obvious candidate to match-up on Motlop.

The Power will need Motlop to have an impact on the scoreboard as it will make Johncock accountable and prevent him from setting up Adelaide’s attacking forays forward with his creative run.

Tom Logan vs. Simon Goodwin
Goodwin played a key role in his side’s win over the Demons last weekend, racking up a game-high 35 possessions off half-back.

He was particularly damaging early, racking up 20 of his 35 touches in the first half.

The Power will be keen to shut-down the drive he provides and will most likely use Logan - who restricted Hawthorn vice-captain Luke Hodge to just 17 possessions in four - in a negating role.

Port will need Logan to be a goal kicker and apply immense pressure inside forward 50 otherwise Goodwin will punish the Power on the rebound.

Jacob Surjan vs. Jason Porplyzia

Porplyzia failed to have much of an impact in the win over the Demons, managing just eight possessions and one goal.

The 24-year-old rarely has two bad games in a row and will need to be watched closely.

Surjan, who can match Porplyzia at ground level and in the air, will most likely line-up on the dangerous Adelaide forward.

Porplyzia has the ability to turn a game on its head with a burst of three of four goals in a quarter, so Surjan will need to be switched on defensively for the full four quarters and not give him any time or space in which to work his magic.

VERDICT: Clashes between these two sides are usually physical and hard-fought and you wouldn’t expect it to be any different on Saturday night. Adelaide is a well-drilled, disciplined side and with the likes of Tyson Edwards and Thompson in the middle they should win more of the contested football and provide their forwards with enough quality supply to kick a winning score. Crows by 16 points.
