Saints down Swans

March 28th 2009 11:34
ST KILDA has overcome a slow start to down Sydney by 15 points at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

The Saints trailed by 27 points at quarter-time but dominated from that moment on, slamming on 11 goals to four to prevail 12.8 (80) to 9.11 (65).

The Swans were held goalless for two consecutive quarters for the first time since 1997.

The win was soured somewhat for St Kilda with Raph Clarke injuring his hamstring in the third term while skipper Nick Riewoldt also limped off in the final term when cramping, but that looked to be merely a precautionary measure.

Two of St Kilda’s off-season recruits were impressive on debut - former Western Bulldogs midfielder Farren Ray racked up 23 disposals while former Hawthorn defender Zac Dawson restricted Barry Hall to just one goal.

Brendon Goddard, Nick Dal Santo and Luke Ball all won plenty of the football while Stephen Milne booted three goals.

For Sydney, Craig Bolton kept Riewoldt goalless while Brett Kirk and Adam Goodes tried hard all night.

The Swans were tipped by many experts to be a big slider in 2009 but they looked to be anything but a team on the decline in the first term as they slammed on the first four goals of the contest in a stunning seven-minute burst.

St Kilda trailed by 27 points at the first change but got themselves back into the contest in the second term with three unanswered goals to close to within eight points at half time.

When Goddard kicked truly at the six-minute mark of the third term the Saints had the lead for the first time of the match.

Further goals to Dal Santo, Andrew McQualter and Justin Koschitzke saw the margin blow out to 27 points heading into the final change.

The Saints put the result well and truly beyond doubt early in the final term with majors to Milne, Jason Gram and Michael Gardiner before the Swans booted the last four goals of the match to add some respectability to the scoreboard.
