ST KILDA has consolidated its place in the top eight with a 32-point win over Carlton at the MCG on Friday night.
The Saints led for most of the night but had to withstand a last-quarter fightback from the Blues, eventually prevailing 18.11 (119) to 12.15 (87).
Stephen Milne was lively for the Saints with five goals while skipper Nick Riewoldt was prominent across half-forward with 23 disposals, 12 marks and three majors.
Nick Dal Santo and vice-captain Lenny Hayes led a St Kilda that stifled Carlton's run while Justin Koschitzke lifted when the game was up for grabs, finishing the match with 14 possessions, nine marks and two goals.
For Carlton, skipper Chris Judd lifted in the final term and finished with 30 disposals while Bryce Gibbs and Heath Scotland tried hard all night, racking up 28 possessions apiece.
The Blues had the better of the first term but failed to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal, booting a wayward 2.8 to take just a four-point lead into the first change.
The Saints broke the game open in a dominant second term, slamming on seven goals to three to take a handy 22-point lead into the main break.
St Kilda kicked the first two goals of the second half through promising youngster David Armitage and Jason Blake to extend their advantage beyond five goals.
Majors from Steven Browne after a 50m penalty and Brad Fisher ensured the Blues remained within striking distance.
But the Saints had all the answers, booting three of the next four to take what appeared to be a match-winning 33-point lead into the final change.
Carlton lifted their intensity in the final stanza and had the first seven inside 50's of the term as they piled on four goals to close to within seven points with more than 10 minutes left on the clock.
Koschitzke steadied the ship for the Saints with a major from an acute angle before goals from Riewoldt, Armitage and Milne sealed St Kilda's eleventh straight win over the Blues.
