Saints in the eight

August 3rd 2008 07:36
ST KILDA has moved back into the top eight with a hard-fought eight-point win over an undermanned Port Adelaide side at Telstra Dome on Sunday afternoon.

The Saints trailed by more than two goals heading into the final change but lifted in the last quarter to prevail 14.17 (101) to 14.9 (930.

The win was soured somewhat for St Kilda with Luke Ball coming off the ground in the dying minutes after hurting his leg in a marking contest.

Jason Gram was St Kilda's best with a game-high 34 possessions and two goals. Leigh Montagna was a busy contributor in the middle with 28 disposals, Sean Dempster restricted Port star Shaun Burgoyne to just 14 possessions while skipper Nick Riewoldt chimed in with three goals.

Kane Cornes and Travis Boak tried hard all day for Port, racking up 30 and 28 disposals respectively. Justin Westhoff kicked three goals while Nick Salter chimed in with two goals on debut.

Despite missing skipper Warren Tredrea, Chad Cornes, Peter Burgoyne and Steven Salopek the Power were the better side in a close first half and skipped out to a 21-point lead at the 10-minute mark of the third term on the back of three majors from Westhoff.

A Tom Logan poster late in the third term proved to be costly with James Gwilt kicking his kicking his second a minute later to get the Saints to within striking distance heading into the final change, with the Power holding a 13-point advantage.

The Saints came out firing in the final term, slamming on four of the first five goals to skip out to a 13-point lead.

A major from Burgoyne reduced the deficit to just seven points with two and a half minutes left on the clock but the Saints held firm in the dying stages to record a crucial win.

The Saints will now face eighth-placed Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday night in what will be a must-win clash for both sides.
