Saints punish Pies

ST KILDA remains on top of the AFL ladder after thumping Collingwood to the tune of 88 points at Etihad Stadium on Monday night.
The Saints dominated after quarter-time, slamming on 17 goals to four to record a convincing 20.8 (128) to 5.10 (40) victory.
With their three most productive forwards this season in John Anthony, Paul Medhurst and Leon Davis out, the Magpies struggled to find an avenue to goal all night and finished with their lowest ever score during Mick Malthouse’s time as coach at the club.
Nick Dal Santo, Leigh Montagna, Lenny Hayes and Brendon Goddard were influential in the middle, racking up 30-plus possessions.
Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt and Adam Schneider starred up forward, booting five goals apiece while Stephen Milne chimed in with four majors.
Sam Gilbert kept out-of-form Collingwood forward Travis Cloke goalless while Zac Dawson restricted Anthony Rocca to just one goal.
For the Pies, Shane O’Bree tried hard all night and finished with a team-high 32 disposals while Sharrod Wellingham was a busy contributor with 20 touches and two goals.
But with the likes of Scott Pendlebury, Dale Thomas, Dane Swan and Tarkyn Locker failing to have their usual impact the Magpies never looked like ending St Kilda’s unbeaten start to the season.
Milne kicked the first goal of the match after just 42 seconds of play before the Magpies replied through Tarkyn Lockyer.
The Pies won more of the contested football and entered inside their forward 50 more times than St Kilda in the opening stanza but failed to make the most of their chances and trailed by 11 points at quarter-time after the Saints booted goals through Schneider and Milne.
St Kilda took control of the contest in the second term, winning the football at the stoppages and moving it quickly as they slammed on six unanswered goals to open up a commanding 49-point lead at half-time.
It was the seventh time this season this season the Saints had held their opposition goalless for a quarter.
Rocca ended a 52-minute goal-scoring drought for the Pies with the first major of the third term..
But any thoughts of a second-half fight back from the Magpies was quashed by the Saints who slammed on six of the last seven goals of the quarter to into three-quarter time with a match-winning 73-point lead.
The Saints didn’t take their foot off the pedal in the final stanza, adding a further five goals to record their biggest ever win over the Pies.
