July 17th 2008 04:35
NORTH MELBOURNE coach Dean Laidley has revealed that the season is over for defender Jesse Smith who has has lost all confidence in his legs.
Smith, who has been hampered by a chronic ankle injury and a succession of hamstring strains - the latest sustained in the VFL last weekend - has managed just two to play just two games for the Kangaroos this season.
Laidley said Smith had lost confidence and had not yet come to terms with his wasted season.
"He's struggling, he's struggling with the mental side of it, he really is," Laidley said.
"His ankle's fine, it's got nothing to do with his ankle, his ankle is probably in the best shape it's been since he's done the injury which is a real bonus for us."
"He just hasn’t had the strength in his legs and his lack of conditioning about not training and … coming off a limited pre-season, the strength in his legs and the confidence in his legs is just shot at the moment."
"We've jumped from one problem to the next."
Laidley said Smith would be put on a program based on strength and running in a bid to get him fit for the 2009 season
