FREMANTLE veteran Dean Solomon last night issued a TV apology to Cameron Ling, who sustained a compressed fracture of the cheekbone after an errant elbow.
Ling copped an elbow to the jaw from Solomon during the first quarter of the Geelong's 74-point win at Skilled Stadium on Saturday afternoon. He was taken to hospital for CT scans on his bruised and swollen face, which later revealed a fractured cheekbone.
A statement from Geelong on Saturday night said he would undergo surgery 'as soon as possible'.
A remorseful Solomon, who was reported for striking Ling apologised for the incident.
"It is probably one of the lowest points in my career," Solomon said from the changerooms.
"It was totally unacceptable and I apologise wholeheartedly to Cameron and the Geelong Football Club. I don't want this to benefit me in any way, I deserve my penalty whatever that will be, but I just want to apologise to Cameron."
Fremantle coach Mark Harvey said he hadn't seen the incident but from what he had been told, he regarded it as unacceptable.
"If players want to put themselves in those situations then they'll pay the penalty via the tribunal. It's not something that we want to stand for," Harvey said.
Geelong coach Mark Thompson said he was proud of how his side responded to Fremantle's physical tactics. .
"Our focus had to be on trying to get through the game and get a victory, which we did," Thompson said.
"I don't think we could avoid just not giving a little bit back. It was an extremely difficult position to be in. By the end of the game you looked back and say our boys were really professional. We play football and that's what we intended to do.
"We weren't over-zealous because we don't play that way.
"We try not to talk to the umpires, we try not to talk to the opposition, we don't unsettle players from the other side. We just play footy, so whatever happened today wasn't about Geelong."
