Stokes drug case adjourned

THE hearing of a drug case against Geelong premiership player Mathew Stokes has been adjourned until next month at Geelong Magistrates' Court on Friday.
The 25-year-old small forward is charged with trafficking and possessing one gram of cocaine, which he told police he bought for friends visiting from Darwin.
Stokes' lawyer Mark Dean, SC, applied for the trafficking charge to be dropped and the case to be heard in the Magistrates' Court.
Mr Dean said the trafficking case was 'weak' and that Stokes had not profited from the purchase of the cocaine or took the drug himself.
But prosecutors said they needed extra time to review a large number of telephone intercepts that may provide more evidence against Stokes.
Magistrate Ronald Saines adjourned the case until April 27 for a contest mention.
The Cats released a statement on Friday saying the initial sanctions imposed on Stokes, which include being suspended until round eight and banned from training at Skilled Stadium while other players are present until round one, remained in place.
If found guilty of trafficking Stokes could be hit with a lifetime ban from the AFL.
