Surgery may signal end of Burton's career

ADELAIDE forward Brett Burton will have surgery to reconstruct his left knee tonight, which will sideline him for at least 12 months.
However, it could also mean the end of his career should Adelaide decide not to renew his contract.
Burton, who is vice-president of the AFL Players Association believes players in his situation need to be looked after.
"Unfortunately the industry is pretty cutthroat," Burton said.
"Obviously, I am out of contract and they (Adelaide) would probably argue, and would have every right to, that what if I had signed the contract last week and they were without me for next year. How do they get compensated?
"We are in an industry where you don't have workers' compensation as such. I guess it is unfortunate and you take the good with the bad, and just move on.
"If we get injured, we get paid until we play again, so there is compensation there, but in my situation, if my contract is not renewed there is nothing. Hopefully, the club will contract me.
"I guess it is a moral obligation if you injure yourself while working for someone. You would expect to be compensated until you can work again."
