TEAM GWS has named Dale Holmes as its inaugural chief executive officer.
Holmes was the general manager of AFL (NSW/ACT) since 2004 and played a key role in establishing Team GWS and its base at Blacktown Olympic Park.
The 42-year-old will join Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy in South Africa next week as part of the AFL-AIS Academy Tour.
Team GWS chairman Tony Shepherd was thrilled by Holmes' apppointment and said it signalled a new phase in the development of the western Sydney team.
"Dale has driven much of the work that went into the establishment of Team GWS and setting up its community focus and community advisory group," Shepherd said.
"Dale's energy and drive and his relationships with the community in Greater Western Sydney as well as his football experience will be a great benefit to this club and help us to establish a club that is strong, sustainable and here for the long term."
Holmes said the role is a unique opportunity to help develop a new club from scratch.
"It is without doubt the biggest challenge for the AFL and it was a challenge that I am really excited to be part of," Holmes said.
"I have had great satisfaction working with community football and also working with the Sydney Swans and seeing the incredible impact they have had on building football in this state and inspiring young people to take up the game and follow AFL."
Prior to working with the AFL, Holmes spent 15 years in senior management in the financial services industry.
He played three games with North Melbourne in 1987 and also played with East Sydney in the AFL NSW league.
