Thornton a required player: Malouf

October 6th 2006 02:49
Carlton Football Club CEO, Michael Malouf has confirmed that Bret Thornton is a required player at Carlton despite comments by his manager today that he is looking at moving to Hawthorn in 2007.

“We are extremely disappointed that Bret is looking to possibly continue his career at another club. The Club has a clear set of policies on player remuneration which are both fair and financially responsible,” said Michael who met with Bret and his manager yesterday.

“With these policies the Club must do what is in the best interests of the Carlton Football Club. Bret is a required player and there is a lot of water to still go under the bridge and we remain hopeful of retaining his services, however we all have a responsibility to do what is best for Carlton,” added Michael

Carlton’s General Manager Football Operations, Grant Williams was also very disappointed with the current position.

“Only a few weeks ago Bret advised that he wanted to stay at Carlton and we have made a substantial offer to him and his manager, an offer that reflects his standing at the Carlton Football Club,” said Grant.

“Importantly this was a three-year deal, further highlighting that he is a required player and we will be fighting to retain him at Carlton, and hopefully he will stay,” added Grant.

Thornton finished 7th in the 2006 Carlton Best & Fairest Award and has played 91 games for the Blues since making his debut in 2002 after being elevated from the Rookie List.

Carlton coach Denis Pagan was also disappointed with the current position and is still hopeful that Bret will remain at Carlton.

“Bret has worked extremely hard to develop his career and we see him as a an important component in the ongoing redevelopment of the team and naturally I hope he decides to continue his career at the club that has given him the opportunity over the last five years,” said Pagan.
