Vic teams to play on the Coast

October 17th 2008 07:03
CARLTON, St Kilda and Richmond will play one home game on the Gold Coast for the next two seasons as the AFL continues to promote the game in the region ahead of the introduction of the new Gold Coast team in 2011.

North Melbourne was scheduled to play three games at Carrara in 2009 before the club's board rejected a permanent move to the Gold Coast late last year which led to the termination of that deal

AFL chief operating officer Gillon McLachlan said the presence of the Blues, Tigers and Saints on the Gold Coast would maintain strong interest in the game up north over the next two years.

"We're thrilled to have three of our traditional AFL Clubs in Carlton, Richmond and St Kilda joining with us to build the game in South East Queensland," he said.

Carlton chief executive Greg Swann said Gold Coast venture is a ‘wonderful opportunity’ for the club to continue to grow.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for us to continue to build the Carlton Football Club," Swann said.

"Carlton has a great supporter base across Australia and this will further strengthen the growth of the club. We believe playing games on the Gold Coast is a great result for the club, our supporters and also for the development and promotion of our great game."

Richmond chief executive Steven Wright said the deal benefited the club and its members.

"The Gold Coast game will provide significant benefits to the club and we will ensure our Victorian members will not miss out," he said.

"In 2009 we will be playing 17 games in Victoria, the same as in 2008 and additionally, members will get access to an additional MCG game in lieu of the Gold Coast game."

That means Richmond members will now enjoy nine home games at the MCG and just two at Telstra Dome.

"This is an excellent outcome for our members and will also provide additional financial security for the club through these difficult economic times," Wright said.
