We were 'disgraceful', says Cox

July 14th 2008 05:19
WEST COAST produced a 'disgraceful' effort in their 77-point loss to Richmond at Subiaco Oval on Sunday, according to ruckman Dean Cox.

Cox said that he and his teammates had to take responsibility for an effort which he also described as 'disappointing', 'embarrassing' and 'unacceptable'.

The premiership winning ruckman also said the Eagles would need to show more intensity than they did in the second term against Richmond, where the Tigers booted 11 goals to one to open up a match-winning lead.

"I think in the first quarter our impact, our intensity round the footy was fantastic and it showed on the scoreboard," said Cox at recovery on Monday morning.

"(But) you get into that second quarter and just the measures we have dropped dramatically and that showed exactly the same way on the scoreboard," he said.

"You can't go letting sides run around uncontested, with no one on them, you can't let them get their hands on the footy first and that's something, that as a playing group, if you can't do anything else, then just try your best and unfortunately we didn't do that."

"They just hunted the footy, they wanted the football a lot more and that's a very disappointing thing," Cox said.

Cox said the only way the Eagles will turn around their fortunes is if they start playing as a team again.

"You don't want people to go out there in survival mode," said Cox. "(Saying) 'I've got to go and get a kick to play next week'."

"Woosha's (coach John Worsfold) always said it, 'if you block for someone or if you tackle or you run to cover someone else or run to somewhere on the ground to create space for another team-mate, that's what you want', sacrificial running, sacrificial acts that probably don't go rewarded on the stats sheet but as a side that's where we were so good in 2006 and we've probably slipped away from that."

"So the focus is to make sure we do play as a team and do the things that make you successful and make you win games of footy."
