August 8th 2008 07:22
COLLINGWOOD youngsters John McCarthy and Chris Dawes have earned their chance in the senior side, according to coach Mick Malthouse.

McCarthy and Dawes will debut against St Kilda in a must-win clash at the MCG on Saturday night. pivotal match for the eighth-placed Magpies on Saturday night at the MCG.

"They are two exciting young players who have perhaps surprised us all with their development over the last few weeks."

Dawes is a powerfully built 193cm forward who is highly rated by the Magpies.

"It would be fair to say Chris Dawes, as a young man before he did his knee, was always highly thought of as a key position player," Malthouse said.

"As a consequence to doing his knee we were able to pick him up pretty cheaply (selection No.28 in the 2006 draft) we thought."

"He's a highly intelligent young man who I think, down the track, will be a good partner in playing in the forward line with Travis (Cloke), Ben Reid and Sean Rusling."

Fellow rookie McCarthy has impressed at VFL level and racked up 22 possessions last weekend.

Malthouse also said there are plenty of promising youngsters coming through which the club can build around.

"There's a really good core of young players coming through which is quite exciting," he said.

Meanwhile, key forward Anthony Rocca is an outside chance to resume from an ankle injury at senior level before the end of the home and away season while Reid may also play for the Magpies as he continues to overcome a foot injury.

Malthouse said Brent Macaffer is expected to be promoted off the rookie list and tried at senior level in the latter stages of this season.
